No to the lens – they may fit but they are not the same. I’m prepared to stand corrected but my understanding is that the older lenses don’t provide adequate resolution down to the pixel level, which causes degradation of your image.
I’d consider the Canon 400d… if you get it from the USA it will be a LOT cheaper!
I’ve mailed Fhotoace and will speak to another colleague tomorrow – I’m happy to eat my words if I’m wrong on the lens, my main aim is to give you good information.

Of course your lens can be used on the DSLR … that was the whole point of making DSLR camera’s … to use all those old lenses used on Nikon SLR cameras
The D40x is at your price break, so that will save you from buying a new lens right away. You lens should give you the same performance it does on the F55.
