I am a beginning photographer, and don't have a big budget. I would like to step up from point-and-shoot cameras, and already have a nikon film N50. Any suggestions on good cameras?

I am no expert on cameras but the SLR range are very good, they can come in at reasonable costs but in the end it depends on your budget and spec. If you can stretch that little furhter i would as the SLR are better value for money if you pay more. Basically pay more and you get better deals, more features for your money. However if you cannot find the one you want do not settle for something less, just continue to save until you can afford the camera you want
Your current camera is perfectly capable at the moment as it is.

Look into a Cannon Rebel XTi. Decent camera for the price.

If you don’t have a big budget and own a Nikon, you’re better off sticking with a Nikon that has a similar layout to your current film camera.
I would therefore suggest the Nikon D40, which is the lowest priced Nikon digital SLR. It usually sells for around $475 to $485 with the basic 18-55mm lens. Operationally, it will be nearly identical in many ways to your current Nikon.
Places to look online:
Don’t forget to factor in shipping costs in your final amount; some charge more than others for shipping (and some charge no shipping at all). The 18-55mm lens is a must, as your current Nikon lens will mount and meter, but might not autofocus on the D40. You can still manually focus though.

Create a video blog…instantly.
I recommend you to go to:
There was a section about digital camera. You can find reviews and articles about famous digital camera companies(They really opened my eyes when I was going to buy one ).You can then select the best digital camera which suits your need.
Hope this helps
