Answers will differ based on each person’s experiences. I personally am a Nikon guy. I bought a D50 back when they were new and have been very satisfied with it. If I was to purchase a new camera I am sure I would go with another Nikon.
Either way a DSLR is a great investment. Read all of the manuals and I would also suggest getting a photography book to learn how all of the features work. You can take so-so photos with the camera on automatic, but if you learn how ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed, Etc. all affect the end result you can take far better photos.
Good luck and have fun!

You can’t go wrong with either. They’re both excellent brands. Go to a store that carries the models you’re interested in and try them out. Ask what lenses and accessories are available for each brand.
And please support your local store. When you’re done getting their valuable advice, give them your business. Shopping online after getting their help is one way to ensure the store won’t be there next time.

Like Sims said, it really depends on who you’re talking to. I, personally, adore Canon, of course, I am biased, given I’ve never handled a Nikon parallel to either of my Canons.
I first purchased (well, it was a christmas present from my dad) a Canon EOS Rebel K2 (film) two years ago. I loved it. It did everything I wanted it to and was a great starter for me. Using film really made me think about what I taking pictures of, and how I was doing it, a lot more. However, last year I upgraded with another Christmas present…the Canon EOS Rebel XTi. Mine is an 8mgpx digital SLR, and came with an 18-70mm lense. I purchased a 70-300mm Quantaray lense for my film camera, though it is compatible with my digital as well (which is always nice). I love this camera. It has a burst mode, which can take (I believe it is) 3 pictures a second for 9 seconds straight, which when played back make your subject look like you’ve caught a movie of it rather than a succession of stills. It’s never failed me. I picked up two memory cards for it, my main one, a 4GB which holds about 1000 pictures, and a back-up 2GB that holds about 400 pictures. I’ve never had a problem with it. It has a built in timer, and plenty of options. You can mess with it and personalize the settings however much you like, or just keep everything on the auto-settings and go with the flow. It’s done everything I’ve wanted it to, from taking pictures at the race track, to stills of bees and flowers.
I absolutely adore it, as well as my older film camera, both of which have yielded wonderful pictures.
I’ve also heard (in Canon’s favor) that Nikons, while amazing cameras with parallel abilities to Canons, are not as reliable in the long-run as Canon; that considering how expensive they are, they should hold together better than they do. Then again, these are second-hand reviews I’ve heard, not that I’ve experienced.

My personal favorite is canon but as long as you pick either canon or nikon you cant go wrong.
